Rock Hall Expands Lineup For Johnny Cash Masters Series

Johnny Cash Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 21st Annual Music Masters

CLEVELAND – The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, who will be honoring the late Johnny Cash as part of their Music Masters series, has announced additional artists who will be performing in an all-star tribute concert on October 21.

Musical all-stars Sam Bush, Paul Cauthen, Ana Cristina, Ira Dean, Nikki Lane, Terry McBride, Bill Miller, The Oak Ridge Boys, Charlie Worsham, and Cash’s longtime drummer WS Holland will come together with previously announced artists Mike Ness of Social Distortion, Eilen Jewell, and L.A. punk band X, to honor the legendary “Man in Black” during the tribute concert on Oct. 21. Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, will serve as executive bandleader and keyboardist Tony Harrell as band director.

The tribute concert and weeklong series of events pay tribute to Cash’s incredible body of work that has resonated for decades with artists and fans alike. Tribute artists and talent participating in the events throughout the week highlight Cash’s profound impact across generations and genres and showcase his legacy.

21st Annual Music Masters Series Schedule:

Film Screening of We’re Still Here: Johnny Cash’s Bitter Tears Revisited with director Antonino D’Ambrosio: Mon., Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Case Western Reserve University’s Tinkham Veale University Center (11038 Bellflower Road, Cleveland, OH). David C. Barnett of WCPN will serve as moderator. This event is free and reservations are not required. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Based on Antonino D’Ambrosio’s book A Heartbeat and a Guitar: Johnny Cash and the Making of Bitter Tears, this film tells the story behind Cash’s lost Native American-themed concept album and his unique collaboration with folk artist Peter Lafarge. The film also chronicles the reimagining of Cash’s highly controversial 1964 record on its 50th anniversary, as recorded at Nashville’s historic Sound Emporium Studios by such artists as Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings and The Milk Carton Kids, working with album producer Joe Henry and legendary studio musicians Dennis Crouch, Patrick Warren and Jay Bellerose.

Library & Archives Open House: Tues., Oct. 18 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Library & Archives (2809 Woodland Avenue, Cleveland, OH) The Library & Archives will showcase Johnny Cash-related materials from its collections, including archival materials, books, magazines, and boxed sets. Visitors will also enjoy Johnny Cash music and footage. No RSVPs necessary. Light food and refreshments will be available.

An Evening with Rosanne Cash: Wed., Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rock Hall. Four-time GRAMMY Award winner, Rosanne Cash will give a 90-minute exclusive interview and perform several songs. Tickets for this event are SOLD OUT, but the event will stream live on rockhall.com.

Music Masters Tribute Concert: Fri., Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the State Theatre at PlayhouseSquare in Cleveland, OH. An all-star tribute concert honoring Johnny Cash. Tickets range from $30 – $100 and available now at playhousesquare.org. A limited number of premium seats have just been released. Johnny Cash Day: Sat., Oct. 22 at the Rock Hall. A day of live music, an exhibit opening, panels, films, and family activities to celebrate the life and music of Johnny Cash. Events are included with Rock Hall admission. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.: Cash & Kids – Bring your kids and play acoustic guitars with guitarist Diana Chittester, play Johnny Cash Madlibs, color pictures of Johnny Cash, listen to his children’s album, and test your geography on a map from “I’ve Been Everywhere.” – Eat-to-the-Beat (3rd Floor)
  • 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.: Watch various reels – some never before seen – of Johnny Cash in various performances, concerts, and television shows. See Johnny Cash perform at the Tennessee Prison in Behind Prison Walls (1976) – Forest City Theater (Main Exhibit Hall)
  • 12:00 p.m.: “Cash & Friends” panel discussion featuring Mark Stiepler, the Cash Trust’s archivist and historian; Lou Robin, Cash manager and concert promoter; W.S. Holland, Cash’s longtime drummer – Foster Theater (4th Floor)
  • 1:00-3:00 p.m.: Shooter Sharp & The Shootouts playing hits by Cash and friends – Klipsch Audio main stage
  • 1:30 p.m.: British photographer Andy Earl discusses the American Recordings photographs that he took of Johnny Cash – Foster Theater (4th Floor)
  • 2:30-4:00 p.m.: Tara Cash Schwoebel will sign copies of her book Recollections: Childhood Memories of Johnny Cash – FYE Store
  • 2:30 p.m.: Watch Johnny Cash perform on Austin City Limits – Foster Theater (4th Floor)

The Annual Music Masters series, a co-production of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Center for Popular Music Studies at Case Western Reserve University, celebrates the lives and careers of artists who changed the shape and sound of rock and roll music. Each year, the Music Masters series explores the legacy of a pioneering rock and roll figure in a range of events that includes Museum exhibits, lectures, films, a major conference and a tribute concert benefiting the Rock Hall’s education programs. Drawing together experts, artists, fans and friends, these events provide new perspectives on the most beloved and influential musicians of the past century. The tribute concert brings together a diverse mix of artists and musical styles, and as a result, many magical moments have taken place over the years.
